Our 12-Week Appointment

According to the due date, Mufasa (as we affectionately refer to the little one) is twelve weeks and one day old. At the doctor's visit today, we were in for a couple of unexpected treats. The first appointment, four weeks ago, was full of poking and prodding so our 12 week check-up was a little more relaxed and full of excitement.

When it came time to jump up on the table to listen to the heartbeat I didn't know what to expect. Our doctor said that we have to be patient in order to find the heartbeat because Mufasa is about the size of a watch face. As she was moving the device over my lower abdomen, and I mean lower, we heard a loud Whoosh - whoosh, but she was very quick to point out that was only me. We were able to hear our baby's heartbeat for only a couple seconds. Mufasa's heartbeat was rapid and very faint.

Because we couldn't hear the heartbeat very clearly or for very long, our doctor decided to give us an extra treat...an ultrasound! We thought maybe our little Mufasa was busy dancing around the womb which was why we couldn't hear the heartbeat very well, but no, not really. Mufasa was still as can be and even with a little nudging the little one was not going to move for us...must take after daddy.

We did get to see the heart pumping away though, which was super cool considering during the first appointment both of us could not really see what the doctor was pointing at. The baby is really starting to look like a little person as were able to see the jaw line, hands, eye sockets, and legs. Oh, and as I alluded to earlier (and as the doctor pointed out), I am carrying little Mufasa very low right now...make of that what you would. So that little baby bump I thought was appearing, yeah not so much. I guess that will come soon enough.

Second trimester here we come!

  2. That's awesome! Thanks for sharing so much of this special experience, especially for someone who's never gone through it! Here's to the low-riding Mufasa (and mom & dad!).

  3. Yay! You heard the heartbeat AND got an ultrasound - double bonus! And, I thought the same thing about low baby location vs. high weight gain location. Apparently, weight gain location is all of your body parts being pushed upward to make room for Mufasa!

  4. How exciting!! I had chills reading about your visit and can't wait for many more stories of Baby Mufasa's growth. I am so happy for the two of you and can't wait for the little one to grow!!
